    Scripture: God Says It Twice

This began some time ago when I was reading the "verily, verily" Scriptures in John. It occurred to me that if God says something once, well, He's God, so anything He says is as strong and powerful and true as it gets. It's perfect, His Word is perfect.

But if He says it twice...! Just anything twice, but if it's a name, like "Samuel, Samuel" or "Martha Martha" or "Peter Peter".... There are no words to describe that. So I've been collecting the following ever since. If you have any to add, please tell me!

    Genesis 9:9
    And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you;

    Exodus 15:16
Fear and dread shall fall upon them; by the greatness of thine arm they shall be as still as a stone; till thy people pass over, O LORD, till the people pass over, which thou hast purchased.

    Exodus 21:19
If he rise again, and walk abroad upon his staff, then shall he that smote him be quit: only he shall pay for the loss of his time, and shall cause him to be thoroughly healed.
Note: “thoroughly healed” here is Hebrew “rapha rapha.”

    Leviticus 11:10-11
10 And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you: 11 They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination.

    1 Samuel 3:10
And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.

    2 Samuel 18:33
And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!

    2 Samuel 19:4
But the king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!

    1 Kings 18:39
And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God.
JEHOVAH, He is Elohiym; JEHOVAH, He is Elohiym.

For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not.

    Psalm 94:1-3
1 O LORD God, to whom vengeance belongeth; O God, to whom vengeance belongeth, shew thyself. 2 Lift up thyself, thou judge of the earth: render a reward to the proud. 3 LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked triumph?

    Psalm 116:16
O LORD, truly I am thy servant; I am thy servant, and the son of thine handmaid: thou hast loosed my bonds.

    That's worth posting twice...

I filled the pulpit at my home church last Sunday and preached on "Consider your ways" from Haggai 1.5, 7.

It's interesting to consider why God should have to, and why He often does, repeat Himself. About anything.

De 19:15 One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.

Mt 18:16 But if he will not hear [thee, then] take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.

2Co 13:1 ? This [is] the third [time] I am coming to you. In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.

It is obviously significant any time the Lord repeats something. With names or words to get our attention.

It seems to me that He repeats things to establish them. If He does not it is dangerous to build doctrine upon them. This is why some are on shaky ground claiming things based on one obscure verse in the scriptures.

For example; Ec 9:5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

Any major doctrine or principle is based "at the mouth of two or three witnesses." It is always repeated

And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. - Exodus 3:4

Exodus 33:12-13 And Moses said unto the LORD, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight. Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people.

Exodus 33:19 And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.

    This is very interesting:

Psalms 139:6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.

    "Too wonderful" here is pil-iy pil-iy pronounced pil-ee? pil-ee? ... Strong's 6383.... twice.

(I can't seem to get Hebrew font to work in here.)

Hebrew has no way to express comparatives such as "good, better, best." This is accomplished using repetition.

Thus "too wonderful" is actually an excellent translation. It's not something the psalmist is repeating as much as if he's saying "this knowledge isn't just wonderfully above / beyond me -- which it is -- it is TOO wonderfully above / beyond me!"

Another place this comes across in it's fullest sense is ~ Isaiah 6:3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.

God is holy, but He's not just "good" holy, or "better" holy, He's the "best" holy there is, and there is none other holy better than He.

Hope this helps. Blessings as y'all con't posting things like this. It's a blessing to read.

I think I had noticed your location before, but just came to me again now that you are in England. When I was a tiny tot my father was stationed there in the air force. We lived off base but (I'm guessing) in housing provided by the USAF.

I can still remember the name of the kid I always played with next door. He was a native. And somewhere I have pictures of myself and my family enjoying a day at an amusement park, but for the life of my the name escapes me. But I sure look like I was having fun in the pics.

Funny the things that come back to you.

NOTE TO TERRI P. I just wanted to share with you that not only does Jesus say things twice, this same concept is applied on things that He does twice as well. ;-)

When I was training in Melbourne Australia 35 years ago I was privileged to study under Dr. Leon Morris and he drew attention to the repetition of names when God addresses people and I have been on the look out for examples ever since. He suggested it was a characteristic of God's speech. If so, that is interesting because we get it in the OT as already mentioned above, then with Jesus during His earthly life and THEN again in Acts when He addresses Paul (Saul, Saul why do...etc Acts Ch 9). So I find that another indication of the Resurrection as the same speech pattern is maintained by God/Jesus consistently pre' and post Easter.

Isa 28:10-11 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: 11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.

Isa 28:13 But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

Isa 28:16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
