Usually the search window will occupy about 1/4 of the bottom left side. Other times it will occupy about 1/2 of the left side without me making any changes. It's easily fixed by alt-a to reset the configuration.
Another thing I noticed - if I press f9 many times in a row, the search window shrinks a little over time.
I use the "Bible on left" configuration with layout customization enabled.
