FOREWORD
The manuscript of this book was prepared more than a year ago, but being unable to find a publisher, it remained silent in my files. I prayed. God answered my prayer. The answer came in a new, strange way. A dear Jewish friend of mine, Fred F. Florence, President of the Republic National Bank of Dallas, promptly responded when I placed the matter before him and contributed sufficient funds for the publication of this book. So far as my knowledge extends, this is the first time in the history of Texas that a Jew has given the money for the publication of a Christian book. When I presented the matter to Mr. Florence, he said:
"Dr. Cranfill, the Christian religion is the dominant religion of America. While, as you know, I am a Jew, I am deeply interested in calling America back to God. Religion is the basis of all human nobility, and I am deeply concerned for the future of our country. We need a nation-wide revival which will deepen in men's hearts the sense of their duty to God and to their fellow-men. It is for this reason that I gladly make this gift; and I wish you to know of my hearty cooperation with you in your praiseworthy plan to give the great sermons of Dr. B. H. Carroll to the world. I did not have the pleasure of knowing this great preacher or of hearing him, but through you and others I know of his greatness, his commanding eloquence, and his power for good. I trust your Baptist people will as gladly buy and read the book as I gladly give the money to insure its publication." The present volume is the twenty-second book from the hand and heart of B. H. Carroll that I have been permitted to present to the public. The first of these books bore the title Sermons and appeared in 1895. Later I was privileged to complete B. H. Carroll's Interpretation of the English Bible, which is a thirteen volume set. Still later there followed Baptists and Their Doctrines, Evangelistic Sermons, Inspiration of the Bible, The River of Life, the Day of the Lord, Jesus the Christ and Revival Messages. Now, climaxing these sermonic and interpretative immortalities is the present group of sermons with the title The Holy Spirit.
It is related that the ancient scribes, when copying Old Testament Scriptures, paused when they came to the name of Jehovah, reverently wiped their pens, and then with new ink, wrote God's name. It is with this same feeling of reverential awe that I venture to indite this foreword to B. H. Carroll's lofty discussion of The Holy Spirit.
As I read and edited these pages I had the feeling that must have been in the heart of Moses when he stood by the burning bush, for I know that the ground covered by these great sermons is holy ground, and no man would dare lightly even to speak the name of God's Holy Spirit.
It is, therefore, with a deep sense of my own unworthiness that I venture to give this book to the public. B. H. Carroll, that noble, devoted, faithful servant of God, walked the way of the highest, and it was fitting that he should leave for those of us who followed on, this great volume of sermons on the Holy Spirit. There may be greater discussions on this sacred theme than those found in this volume, but if so I have never been fortunate enough to come upon them.
These sermons were compiled by Professor J. W. Crowder, of the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and his arrangement of them has been left undisturbed. He has been of incalculable help to me in this and in much other service I have rendered in the preparation of the Carroll material.
It was with a trembling hand and an inexpressible humility of spirit that I edited these sermons. That they are needed; that they will help every soul who reads them; that they will live to bless our world long after all who have had any part in them have passed into rest, and that they will stimulate inquiring souls to loftier lives, I have not a doubt.
May God's Spirit, of whom these pages speak, guide the reader to new altitudes of Christian life and service, is ml humble prayer.
