Help with mac

I had downloaded the trial version of Crossover and Swordsearcher and it worked fine. I then purchased Crossover, and then purchased SS 6.1 on DVD. However, I am having some difficulty. The problem is as follows.

When I try to use SS it comes up saying "I'm sorry, an error occurred in the application..." I took both Crossover and SS off my machine and first re-installed Crossover. When I went to install SS the 'terms and conditions' were written in what appeared to be Hebrew. I agreed to the conditions, but when I typed in my User License serial number it was also in what looked like Hebrew. It did nevertheless allow the application to be installed, but yet again the application does not work. As soon as I try to do anything the same error box appears. Can anyone with a mac help? Is there anything I should try to get it working on my mac?

Thanks in anticipation

I know there is at least one person on the forum that has used Crossover; hopefully they can offer some advice.

Also, if you are having problems with the actual installation process, Codeweavers should be able to help with that. While they can't provide assistance with SwordSearcher itself they should be able to assist with installation problems, since that is part of what the value of their software is.

Went to Codeweavers and they helped get things working. For anyone else with a similar problem, do the following:-

Completely remove Crossover as per the instructions at this page:

http://www.codeweavers.com/support/wiki/mac/mactutorial/uninstall

Then, restart the computer and install Crossover again. Then,
insert your SwordSearcher 6.1 DVD. Ignore any pop-ups regarding
installation that Crossover gives, and then head to this webpage:

http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=7588

Click on the "install via CrossTie" button a the above site, which will
open the Crossover Install Software menu. Here, check to make sure that
the second "bar" says "will install from (name of CD)", and not "Will
download the installer from http://www.swordsearcher.com...". If it says "Will download from...", click on that bar and select the inserted CD as the installer source. After doing so, click on "install" to proceed with the installation.

I am not very computer literate, but I imagine the above procedure may help with almost any problems installing on a mac.

I am now a happy bunny.

Glad you got it working well! I have SS6 installed in CrossOver, but don't actually use it since I can't get the Bible audio to work on a verse by verse basis. Other than that, I think the CrossOver installation has all the same features as the Windows one. IIRC, I once had a problem with CrossOver and they helped me solve it very professionally; I'm glad they helped you out.

Excellent report, thank you!

i did all of the below and still get the an application error...swordsearcher6.exe...anyone have a clue? and I am using the trial version of crossover...this is my last ditch effort to use SS which i purchased last year...pc died and i decided to buy a mac, to bad I cant use SS.....

I would recommend you contact CodeWeaver's tech support. They are very capable. One time I had problems with printing via CrossOver (not with SwordSearcher), and they helped me out. I don't recall now, but I think we did it by chat. As it turned out, the problem was complicated, but eventually they found it and got it working for me. I don't know about how to get CrossOver support if you're only on a trial version of CrossOver, but I'd say if you are staying with Mac and love SwordSearcher, it may be worth it to buy. Their support is time limited based on when you bought CrossOver. Also, you can get CrossOver cheaper than retail (-25%) by following the instructions here: http://www.swordsearcher-mac.com/

This page (http://www.codeweavers.com/store/about/) says that codeweavers.com will refund your purchase if you're not completely satisfied. So maybe you could buy CrossOver for Mac, get support to see if you can get SwordSearcher working, and then if you still don't like CrossOver, ask for a refund.

Another option is to use www.virtualbox.org and have a virtual machine on your Mac. Unfortunately with that option, though VirtualBox is free itself, you have to buy a copy of Windows to install. That is how I run SwordSearcher 6 on my Mac. In CrossOver I could never get SS's verse-by-verse Scourby audio to work.

Hope that helps some.

thanks for the reply Eric, I was wondernig, does virtual box open your MAC up to the same viruses as windows? if so its not worth the headache is the LEAST. # 1 reason I switched ...I don't believe MAC is unhackable but it far better than windows!

A Virtual Machine would contain a virus within the virtual machine like any other software it runs, so you couldn't affect things outside of the vm box.

That being said, the reason Macs don't have as many problems with virus software is because just like all other software, most of it is written for Windows. ;)

I know many people have had problems with virus and malware, but I've been using Windows since 1995 and have never had a virus problem.

your right on Brandon, I always end up with viruses or something! gotta any tips how you stay virus free?

I run the Microsoft Security Essentials which is a free service/program from Microsoft that monitors computer activity for virus and malware software. However, the main thing is to avoid attack vectors like clicking links in email that you don't know exactly where they go. Also, using a strong browser like Internet Explorer 9 with SmartScreen turned on is a good idea. A lot of people have the misconception that IE is an insecure browser, but recent versions of it stop and prevent a lot of malware attacks that others don't.
